Hair: Remington Schulz

He is the man behind some of the most envied hair in Sydney. From Elle Ferguson to Carrie Bickmore, Remington has styled some of the most sought after celebrities and while he may work behind the scenes, rest assured this charismatic man is no shrinking violet.

I had the pleasure of catching up with Remington on his home turf, Bondi Beach, recently. As we got stuck into our healthy lunch (that body doesn’t maintain itself) we spoke life, hair and getting signed with one of Sydney’s hottest new talent agencies earlier this year, The Ministry of Talent.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Remington discovered his artistic flare at an early age. By the time he was in his mid- 20’s he had already conquered North America and was ready to face a new challenge. Moving to Sydney in 2001, for the “warm weather, beaches and the sun”, Remington quickly cemented his feet firmly within Sydney’s notoriously clique social circles.

Where it all began...

I was trained in Vancouver by a very patient Norman Lalonde, an amazing hairstylist. After a rough start in the industry at 17, he took me on board. I was 18 at the time and he really guided me the best he could.

Why Hairdressing?

I actually fell into the hairdressing by mistake! I was training to be a chef, but after a year of being in a hot sweaty kitchen I didn’t feel it was the right fit. A friend at school asked if I wanted to work with her at a hair salon....Basically the rest is history!

How did you come to conquer Sydney?

Upon moving to Sydney in 2001 I worked my way up the social scene by working at the top salons, which opened the door into the world of fashion and TV. I worked very hard and said YES to everything I could! I assisted on every shoot, fashion parade, commercial, and editorial campaign I could get in to. All those yes jobs finally paid off and in October of 2013 I was able to go out on my own and become a freelance stylist.

What was your first big break?

I received my first big break working with Delta Goodrem. She had a stylist in London and LA but not one in Australia. Delta is an absolutely beautiful girl inside and out.

What has been your most memorable project so far?

The most memorable project was working with my client Connie Mitchell from Sneaky Sound System on The Voice. Connie was on Seal's mentor team. We had a lot of fun filming that, but worked very long hours!

What’s next for Remington?

I just want to be busy! I want to keep working and immerse my self in more interesting and challenging jobs. I have a few exciting projects in the works but I don't want to jinx myself… Basically busy is the word.

Describe yourself in three words…

Happy, Workaholic and a Romantic.

Talking Hair

The most on-trend hair cut at the moment is … the Lob

The colour to go for… is still very much balayage. However this year it is all about subtlety, a soft flow of colours. Caramel tones are in!

The secret to the perfect balayage is… to have it start at the eyes. A lot of people have it start a lot lower and it doesn’t highlight the right areas of the face.

The most requested celebrity hairstyle is… Jared Leto’s. I get men and women requesting it. Can you blame them?

A girl shouldn’t be without… Sea salt spray and a good quality hairspray
