Makeup: Tobi Henney for Carissa Walford
As a highly respected hair and make up artist, Tobi has worked with celebrities ranging from Jesinta Campbell and Laura Dundovic to Samantha Wills. It was little wonder then that Carissa Walford picked the Sydney based artist as part of her glam squad for the 2015 TV Week Logies. The end result, THAT jaw dropping look which has been featured on every best dressed list since. Epitomising what a good artists stands for, the make up complements and doesn’t distract from the dress. A perfect match to that Steven Khalil masterpiece.
On a high after what has been a phenomenal response on social media, Tobi spoke with TWAIN about the stand out make up which caught our attention the minute it was loaded on Instagram. Here, she takes us through the products used to create the look. We know which lip products we’ll be getting our paws on during our next trip to the make up counter…
What products did you use on Carissa's lips?
I began by powdering around Carissa's lip line with MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Powder - this helped the lip to stay put all night.
Then I lined her lips with MAC Beet Lip Liner pencil
Next, I applied MAC Lipmix in Crimson (as a base colour) to create depth to her lips
Finally, I applied Nars Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella to finish the look
How can we achieve those perfectly bronzed cheekbones at home?
Start with a cream contour a few shades darker than your skin colour. For Carissa, I used MAC Pro Conceal Correct Palette in Medium Deep. Then apply Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow to create a beautiful contour. Bronze with MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Medium Dark.
The bronzed eye had just the right amount of smokiness - what products did you blend together to create this look for Carissa?
I primed her eyelid with MAC Groundwork Paint Pot. Next, I applied MAC Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Uninterrupted to the entire lid and smoked out with a blending brush. I used MAC Teddy Liner on her upper and lower lash line and smoked out into crease. Then I blended MAC Bronze eye shadow under the lower lash line and highlighted the inner eye and brow bone with the Highlight shade in Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow.
Who was your muse when creating the makeup for Carissa?
Having just finished working on Sydney Fashion Week, I wanted Carissa's look to be runway meets red carpet. Autumn inspired me to create a deep berry lip, which complimented the Mustard Gown by the talented Steven Khalil.
Who would this look suit? Are there faces that a bronzed face/red lip wouldn't work on?
This look is all about light and shade and creating a depth that suits your skin colour. Girls with a darker complexion could vamp up the lip and even transform the lip to a purple tone to suit.
