Culture: Hannah Grossberg, Artist

At only 23, Hannah has built an impressive personal brand and has received commissions from creative brands including Buro, Missoni, Sass and Bide, Vogue Australia, GAP, Oroton, health and wellness influencer JS Health and womenswear label Aje – and now LOVE TWAIN.

Her collaborative projects have ranged from retail store window installations and edgy sketches of new fashion collections to family oil paintings, custom paintings onto handbags and illustrations created for recipe books.

It was only natural for TWAIN to enlist Hannah to illustrate one of our Spring/Summer looks available from the sites freshest  new label, Acler. Here is Hannah’s story…

It all began at a young age, with inspiration and drive gained from her mother. As an occupational therapist she encouraged art as a healthy outlet, a physical way of expressing ones internal self, constantly encouraging creativity to flow through Hannah’s playroom. A room covered in wads of paper, inky pens, paints brushes and cupboards of delicious supplies.

“There was no holding back when it came to our artistic limits. She provided me with an inherent sense of confidence and ability”, says Hannah.

Hannah studied a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Sydney University, closely followed by a Bachelor of Fine Art at Parsons The New School for Design in the big smoke – New York City.

Who do you look up to in life?

HG

My dad, as he never ceases to inspire me with his incredible zest for life, living each day like its “the grand final!!!”

What is your favourite work to date?

HG

I really loved working on the last piece I did for a private commission, where I painted a realistic landscape directly on the walls of my clients' home. This very traditional technique referred to as ‘Trompe L’oeil’ transported me to the most beautiful and serene space, where one is totally immersed in enjoying the process of creating so much beauty around them.

Oil painting or water colour?

HG

Both mediums offer me such a different and unique process. Oil painting is where my heart lies as its richness and depth of colour dramatically heightens the viewers experience, making my subjects feel alive and at any moment could jump right out of the canvas! Only recently have I enjoyed using watercolour as I have learnt to completely trust the magic of chance and spontaneity in the medium and let go of any sense of control.

What is your biggest 'pinch me' moment?

HG

Being in NYC and walking into Parsons gave me such an incredible feeling of who I am and what my purpose is. I remember jumping of excitement to realise I had manifested this amazing moment!

So what's next for Hannah Grossberg?

HG

My dream is to create a gallery where young contemporary artists can showcase their creative talents and connect with like-minded individuals. I would hope that this space encourages good energy and high spirits where people leave the gallery happier and full of enthusiasm.

Now onto our very own LOVE TWAIN piece (pictured above) Can you talk us through this piece and how you did it?

HG

For this illustration I wanted to keep within the blue colour palette and style while offering a new and artistic take on the brand. I loved doing this work in watercolours as it gave the look a beautiful softness that is unique to the HG touch!
