Lifestyle: How to get in shape for a world tour – with Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez; global hitmaker, Instagram darling, Louis Vuitton muse and the all-around nice gal is having a moment and here at LOVE TWAIN HQ we for one couldn’t be happier. You would all but have to have been living under a rock not to have noticed that Instagram’s reigning queen has been making waves with her global ‘Revival’ tour. Aside from the sweet tunes and body suits that would leave the most seasoned of catwalk queens quivering with fear, Selena’s toned physique has been all but impossible to miss. The name behind the recent transformation is none other than personal trainer Amy Davis.

The LA-based personal trainer has been accompanying Selena on her recent world tour, ensuring she not only looks the part but maintains her stamina on stage. So while we may not have Nicolas Ghesquière knocking on our door to dress us, or a series of hits under our belts, heck we can at least try and look the part.

Here we asked Amy to share her training secrets…


First, let’s talk Selena

How can we all get in shape like Selena:
Mix up your routine, keep a healthy mind, body, soul, and stretch. It’s important to remember that working out should make you feel good. If you keep your same old routine, you will most likely get bored and wind up skipping the gym. Working out should be a part of your lifestyle, not an obligation or burden. We make our workouts fun by keeping it fresh and doing something different each day. We do everything from Pilates to hiking to dance cardio to circuit training to yoga to spinning.. and the list goes on. No matter what the workout, we always make time to stretch. It keeps your muscles long and lean, improves your performance, helps your joints, and enables your muscles to work to their best ability… also, it feels really good. Keeping fit, eating healthy and loving yourself are all tied together. When you feel good physically, you want to eat healthy, and when you take good care of yourself you are happy. When you are happy- results come fast. I always say, self love for the win!

Selena’s work out is all about…
Balance and fun (never underestimate the power of a good dance party!). Selena works her tush off every night on stage, so some days are all about stretching and taking it easy, and some days are about work. You have to listen to your body. No matter what, we make sure to do a little yoga and stretching every day. It is both physical and mental to give yourself some time to breath and let go. Oh, and good music is a must. She has the best playlists. We could be in the middle of a set of moves, and if a good song comes on we stop and dance our hearts out. Feels amazing.

Now let’s talk about Amy… 

In life, what should we all avoid:
Exercise wise: Negativity and pressure. Love your body. You only have one. That doesn’t just mean going to the gym, that means keeping a positive and loving attitude towards it and towards yourself. They go hand in hand. When I met and fell in love with my husband we both lost weight. I was just so happy and carefree that the effects spread all over.

Food wise, I try and avoid sugar and anything that is processed with chemicals. I eat all organic and, whenever possible, local ingredients and hormone free/ grasped meats. I love going to the farmers market and getting tonnes of fresh veggies, eggs, and food for the week- eating well is a lifestyle, not a diet. I eat meat, I eat bread, I don’t deprive myself of anything I want, but that also means I don’t get cravings. I always prefer savory to sweet, and I never turn down a good burger and fries. My husband and I are popcorn addicts… don’t even get me started.

What is your biggest tip…
Learn to accept. It trumps everything else. It is only when we fight life that it fights us back. Acceptance is power. Oh, also laugh alot and love hard. Falling in love with my husband was and is the best thing that has ever happened to me- and I feel all the healthier for it.

What is your daily routine…
Every day is different – both at home and on the road. But the few constants are..

I start my day with a big glass of water, probiotics (Primal Defense) and Electrolyte pills (I do a lot of infrared sweating and working out, so I lose a lot of trace minerals and electrolytes. They replenish me and also give me a surge of energy!). I am a tea addict, so I always start with black tea (PG Tips or English Breakfast) and some sort of non dairy milk/creamer and honey. I meditate as often as possible- even if for 5 minutes. A mental break is imperative to be your best calm self.

My workout changes daily (on purpose). But I always incorporate some yoga and stretching into my day. I try and aim for 30 minutes of cardio at least 4 times a week and I do toning/stretching about 6 days a week. Sometimes my schedule only allows for 20 minutes, but my whole motto is to be flexible with your life and your workout. Obsession never got anyone anywhere, so I don’t put pressure on myself about a certain work out schedule. I am so active in general and I work out with clients so much that I get plenty of physical activity every day. On tour people joke that I move and walk faster than anyone else. I am always speeding around through the venue.

3 times a week I do my infrared sweat bed. I got addicted to this place in Los Angeles called Shape House. It is an amazing sweat lodge owned by a very good friend of mine, Sophie Chiche. Infrared sweating has a vast amount of benefits from releasing toxins and heavy metals, to improving skin elasticity (your skin glows after!), to helping you sleep, keeping your immune system sharp, to helping stop your mind so you can meditate.. to much much more! I loved it so much that I turned all my clients on to it. Selena especially loved it- so we got a bed to take on the road. On our off days we take turns sweating. It will be very helpful when we start our world tour – it helps reduce the effects of jet lag!

I wear a lot of hats in life. I am also an actress and producer, and Selena calls me a lifestyle guru. I am working on putting our some sort of lifestyle guide book or blog with a friend of mine. I cook and do nutrition and am all about design and interiors. As corny as it sounds, life is so fun and full of amazing things.. I want to do it all!
