Spend 5: Divya Bala – Fashion Writer

When it comes to becoming a writer we can thank the likes of Carrie Bradshaw and Andrea Sachs for putting on a rather rosy pair of sunglasses onto our eager little heads. Sure we were willing to put up with nightmare bosses but those amazing interviews, overseas trips and Miranda Priestly worthy wardrobes are far and few between. While many of us put the hours in at the sports department writing about the little league, the light at the end of the tunnel (also known as Vogue), seems like a lifetime away. That is unless you are Divya Bala.

Freelance writer and style icon in the making, Divya has a resume that would make any fashion writer feeling a little green with envy. From Vogue to Harper’s Bazaar and Matches Fashion, this globetrotting wordsmith has written for them all. I mean when you get to interview the Louis Vuitton menswear designer, attend fashion shows and always manage to look like you stepped out of a street style best-dressed list, you know you are well on your way to making it.

So just in case you haven’t been catching up on your bible readings, spend 5 with Divya Bala, the name to watch, read, stalk… I mean we wouldn’t blame you.

Name: Divya Bala

Occupation: Writer

It all started when: I booked a one-way ticket to London.

Best part of my job: Writing about interesting people and beautiful things. And the fact that I can do it from any corner of the world, that’s pretty special.

My writing style is: Probably too flowery and long-winded.

I was taught: To not be so flowery and long-winded!

I get inspired by: People who stay humble and kind, no matter how successful they become.

Career highlight: Literally any time someone tells me they’ve read my work and enjoyed it.

Current city: Sydney, Australia.

Current view: A black and white postcard of Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol and Chuck Wein coming out of a manhole that my friend Martini sent me for my birthday.

Next destination: Chile for work.

First fashion heartbreak: Way back when the brand was still spelt with a ‘T’, I left my favourite pair of Ksubi jeans and a hand-scrawled t-shirt on the bus. I’m afraid I’ve never fully recovered.

My style is: Becoming predictable: Silk shirt + Denim + Saint Laurent ankle boots; Repeat.

Style muses: Sarah Harris, Phoebe Philo and Capucine Safyurtlu.

Fashion bible: British Vogue, of course!

Biggest fashion faux pas: Obscenely low-rise jeans.

Always stalking: The Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts because, dreamy.

I need to get my paws on: Those black Balenciaga heels with the silver sequin embellishment from Demna Gvasalia’s first collection.

Favourite emoji: The little :/ awkward face.

My friends would describe me as: Hard to reach. (Sorry!)

But I would say I am: Totally grateful and completely in love with all of them.

Biggest regret: I try not to have those.

Current addiction: OTT vintage gold jewellery.

On my to do list: Get my motorcycle license.

I wish I had more time to: Trawl for new music and update my playlists.

I am looking forward to: 2017! A fresh start.

Life motto: Don’t be a dick.
