Spend 5: Jaimie Sortino

A year of growth both personality and professionally has seen local designer Jaimie Sortino make some serious waves amongst the coveted fashion world. Having recently unveiled his latest collection ‘The Woodland Lights’, to much acclaim, the Adelaide based designer has also created exclusive pieces for Delta Goodrem’s smash hit video Wings. With a move to LA on the horizon, there seems to be no slowing down for this humble talent. On the evening of the biggest sporting red carpet event on the calender, TWAIN spend 5 with the designer dressing some big names at tonights Brownlows.

Name: Jaimie Sortino

Occupation: fashion designer

Hometown: Adelaide, Australia

Would love to own a home in: Paris!

The Woodland Lights Collection in three words: whimsical, organic, dramatic

Jaimie Sortino design philosophy: I try to weave a story into every piece. I also try to have the balance of old world glamour with the modern edge.

Favourite texture or material to work with: silk satin, for drape and structure. Silk tulle and beading for the more soft, romantic pieces.

Most memorable dress to date: that is like picking a favourite child!! maybe not one particular gown, but there are a few pieces in my new collection “the woodland lights” that have details that have made me push my creativity.

What is the view from your office? Trees! Lots of trees!

Inspiration comes from: everywhere,I try to always look in my surroundings. Living in the Adelaide hills am treated to so much inspiration and beauty all year around with a changing landscape. I draw a lot inspiration from the glamour of the 1950s. Grace Kelly is one of my fashion icons.

On the Brownlows

This year I will be dressing: 4 gorgeous girls. Mardi(partner of Patrick Dangerfield, Renee(partner of Travis Boak) Anna( wife of Eddie betts), Lauren( partner of Hamish Hartlett) each girl has her own style which we have captured perfectly.

Red carpet rule to live by: dress to your style. Always be yourself. You don’t always have to follow the trends. Fashion is fun.

Biggest red carpet fashion faux pas: nanna patties.. Even the word patties makes be cringe…

Glamour is: effortless, I think glamour should be simple and relatable to yourself. Everyone has their own style and version of glamour.

On personal style: black, easy, black, most things oversized and black..with some white.

Go to label: I love buying basics like asos but mixing in designer pieces.

Signature scent: Dolce and Gabbana ” the one”

Biggest fashion regret: White Jeans. Thank god there is no photo evidence of them.

The first thing I do in the morning: snuggle my sausage dog Jnr & have an earl grey tea.

The last thing you do before I go to bed: wash my face and moisturise! And of course check Instagram!

Currently reading: I find it really hard to sit and read books. Couldn’t actually tell you the last book I read. Does vogue count?…

My life soundtrack sounds a little like: like life itself- a mix of dark and light! My iTunes is the most collective mix of music! From Kanye west to Fleedwood Mac. I love working to chill/relax house music that I can just get lost in.

If I weren’t a designer I would be: interior decorator or something to do with home styling. I love decorating and home styling

On 2015 so far: a year of growth! both personally and creatively.

Life Motto: always follow your heart.
