Spend 5: Marin Hopper
Born in Hollywood, made in New York, Hayward bags are the epitome of old-school glamour and style. A node to the Hollywood allure, during a time when mystery still surrounded the greats and sophisticated glamour reigned supreme – the American luxury brand draws on generations of Hollywood history and style to create a line of accessories which never date and are made to live a lifetime in your wardrobe. Just what you would expect from a designer whose family helped shape the Hollywood magnetism and made it legendary all those years ago.
Designer Marin Hopper doesn’t shy away from the fact that her childhood was unlike most. In fact, she draws on it for inspiration to create a collection of easily wearable pieces with a refined yet rebellious sense of experimentation. The daughter of Hollywood bad boy, actor and photographer, Dennis Hopper and actress and author Brooke Hayward, Marin grew up surrounded by all the creative inspiration one could ask for. Think Jane Fonda, Andy Warhol, parties and beautiful ladies whose fashion was the stuff of legends. And so with Hayward designs, Marin set out to share this quintessential, evocative, sometimes surprising, often unconventional — but always dazzling — American experience with the world.
Spend 5 with the daughter of Hollywood royalty who is carving her own slice of history one designer bag at a time…
Name: Marin Hopper
Occupation: I own an accessories brand, Hayward Luxury, with my husband, John Goldstone
It all began when: I was working as the fashion director of Elle USA and decided I loved accessories and wanted to make them
Why bags? I believe that, like shoes, bags can be the exclamation point that finishes off one’s look – except with out the issue of fit which comes with making shoes. I also travel a lot – and love to conceive of different bags, both big and small, that will travel and pack well. Kind of an obsession of mine!
Career highlight: I absolutely adored my turn as a fashion editor, and later as the fashion director of Elle – but am super happy now to be able to use my experiences from working at magazines, and with fashion brands, to be able to tell the Hayward story – through the rich characters from my family and their worlds of Hollywood, film, and a genuine love of art and design
Work uniform looks like: Tee shirt, jeans and a leather jacket with either one of my new H cross body bags, the Bobby clutch or the two tone suede shopper tote
Come weekend, I like to wear: T-shirt, jeans and a leather jacket. I am from California so work and weekend wear blends into the same for me, quite honestly. I do change accessories, though. For night, I love to wear my box clutch in tooled leather. Or one of my Fortuny brocade shopper totes
Favourite designer: Karl Lagerfeld
A good outfit begins with: The best accessories!
My wishlist consists of: Having more time to take my dog to the park – and vacation, vacation, vacation!
Favourite item in my wardrobe: Buccellati gold diamond and ruby oversized cuff
Style muse: Slim Keith – she always wore the greatest cuffs and was the original influencer of mixing a sportier look with a glamorous twist of an accessory – whether it was a beautiful bracelet or a jewel like box clutch
Must read: I have been enjoying East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Favourite city: Stockholm – perfect blend of a city with old world charm with new world design. Plus being a Californian, I love the outdoor nature of a city surrounded by water. It is beautiful – like Paris, but for Santa Claus!
Next destination: This summer Porto Ercole in Tuscany; next winter Copenhagen
Travel is: My most favorite thing to do!
Currently living: In New York – but am back in LA once a month for a week or two
Favourite hang out: When in LA – Chateau Marmont or poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel
For a cocktail I visit: Bemelman’s Bar at The Carlyle in NYC
For a nice meal I visit: Estela
Ideal Saturday night: Going out with friends – either to a great restaurant – or to their house or having them over to mine
On speed dial: My daughter, Violet
Most used app: Instagram
I am looking forward to: My vacation in August
Life motto: Buy what you love
