Locals: Chris Kontos

Chris Kontos, Adelaide Fashion Festival Creative Director, designer, black on black devotee and the man who knows South Australia like no other. I mean he helped put it on the map after all. Fashion map that is, calm down kids!

Back when Sydney and Melbourne were on everyone’s lips, Kontos was helping place some of South Australia’s most iconic names on the map. And when he decided to make a move from creating threads on the runway to making runway magic, he ensured that Adelaide Fashion Festival was inked on everyone’s fashion calendar. Securing the likes of Coco Rocha and Vogue, he worked tirelessly to show that when it came to fashion, Adelaide was no loner the underdog. Forget about following trends. Nowadays, South Australia is helping set them.

Having worked with the likes of Paolo Sebastian, ACLER, Australian Fashion Labels and Sylvy Earl, gamechangers who have all firmly planted their feet in our amazing city, Chris has long championed our amazing state and all the talent it has to offer. So in celebration of all things South Australian, we asked our own Anna about the ‘go-to’ places to visit while in Adelaide for #AFF17. I mean if anyone knows where the cool kids hang, it’s the man that brought them here.

Name: Chris Kontos

Occupation: Adelaide Fashion Festival Creative Director

Current city: Adelaide

I have lived here for: 3 years

I moved back here because: For work and family and because I love this amazing state.

Career highlight here: Becoming the Creative Director of the Adelaide Fashion Festival. It is the perfect platform to showcase all the creative talent the state has to offer.

What you might not expect: Adelaide is bursting at the seams with creative talent, emerging designers, photographers, world class restaurants, beautiful wineries and vibing cocktail bars and hot spots. It’s the place to be right now…

Favourite thing to do: Eating and drinking. We are spoilt for choice. The lead up to the AFF is always hectic so I love popping into Sean’s Kichen for a meal. 2KW is always brillinat to re-energise with a good cocktail.

Must visit: La Sing Karaoke on Gouger St. Live a little!

For a good meal: You are spoilt for choice. Sean’s Kitchen is a local gem. Argos on the Parade is fantastic for a quick bite to eat. PRESS on Waymouth is our go-to for meetings when food is also on the agenda.

For fine dining: The Magill Estate, Penfolds. It’s a must visit when in Adelaide.

For a hard earned beverage: The Exeter, The Collins Bar and 2KW.

For a night out, visit: Mary’s Poppins. I’ll meet you there after the AFF on the dance floor.

Easiest way of getting around: Uber or the tram. Since kitten heels are back, why not walk a little. Take in the city vibes as you make your way to your runway show.
